Alps of Sarntal

The Alps of Sarntal with 140 mountain peaks surrounds blooming Alpine meadows, soft slopes and idyllic villages. Even though there are no high glaciers, these peaks invite you to enjoy some breath-taking panoramic views over the Dolomites and the entire South Tyrolean Alpine mountain range. The highest summit is the Hirzer Peak at an altitude of 2,781 metres.

A valley full of challenges

The community fo the Sarntal is with 303 km² the largest community in South Tyrol.

The small church near the refuge hut of the Latzfonser Kreuz in the Alps of Sarntal is located at an altitude of 2,305 m and therefore the highest-altitude pilgrimage place in Europe.

The Sarn pine trees grow on an area of 1,365 hectares and form about 60% of the tree population of the entire South Tyrolean region. Due to the acidic soil, there is a pleasant effect on the dwarf pines and they develop particularly well.

Art and crafts from the Sarntal

Just like the traditional costumes and customs, the old craft skills of the Sarntal are still kept alive today. Professions, which are almost extinct such as the quill embroidering, basket making, hand weaving, pipe carving etc. are still in existence here. The people of the Sarntal are very famous for their wood-working skills. The 'Sarner Jangger' (jackets) and the Sarn 'Toppar' (slippers) are not only much sought-after in the Sarntal.
