Castle Sigmundskron Castle Sigmundskron is the largest castle in South Tyrol. It was built around 900 A.D. and was first called 'Formicaria', later 'Firmian'. In 1370, Duke Sigmund, the sovereign of Tyrol, bought the castle and named it 'Castle Sigmundskron'. In 1957, it was the venue for a large demonstration in which 50,000 South Tyrolean citizens demanded more rights from the Italian government. On 11th June 2006, the extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner opened the 'Messner Mountain Museum' at Castle Sigmundskron.
