Ruins & castels in Eppan



Ruins of Castle Boymont
Built around 1230.  Destoyed by fire in 1742. Since then in has laid in ruins. One of the most beautiful castles in Tyrol. From Castle Korb, it can be reached by foot in 45 minutes.

Castle Hocheppan
The most famous castle in the South of South Tyrol. It was once the mightiest castle in the country.  Built by Earl Ulrich II between 1125 and 1130. Bajuvarian Earl of Bozen, reigned over the district of Trent and continuously fought with the Earls of Tyrol for supremacy. In 1158, the citizens of Hocheppan lost their battle with Henry the Lion after they had robbed one of the Papal carriages, which was loaded with gold and on its way to the Emperor Barbarossa. After this, the Earls of Tyrol reigned over this area, which gave the region its present name: Tyrol. The castle can be reached by foot from the car park in about 45 minutes.

Castle Englar
Very beautiful late-Gothic castle. Built around 1450. Today, used as B&B.

Castle Freudenstein
Built in the 13th Century. Re-built in 1519. About 100 years ago, the castle was renovated by Baron Seibald, ambassador to the German Reich in Tokyo. Two castle chapels, Loggias in the courtyard (privately owned, cannot be visited).

 

Castle Gandegg
Built around 1550 by Earl Khuen. Beautiful Renaissance building with mighty round towers (privately owned, cannot be visited).

 

Castle Korb
Portly tower, built in 1240, around the same time as Hocheppan and Boymont (the famous Eppan Castle Triangle). Today, used as hotel.

Castle Moos Schulthaus
The main tower was built around 1270 and some centuries later, extended to the present complex.

 

Castle Paschbach
The Paschbach tower was built in 1248. In 1585, the castle was extended to the present complex. Today, used as a B&B.

Castle Warth
Thrones above the main road at the northern entrance to Eppan. Built around 1250.  Today, used as holiday apartments.
